Oral sub mucous fibrosis (OSMF) can be regarded as a disease of altered collagen metabolism linked mainly to consumption of areca nut and pan masala. As connective tissue changes characterized by deposition of dense collagen fiber bundles in oral tissue leading to fibrosis. OSMF is also considered as a pre-malignant condition, with the reported risk of malignant transformation.
Evaluate and analyze the distribution of the collagen I in different stages of OSMF by monoclonal antibody Immunochemistry (IHC) and Comparison of the expression of collagen I in OSMF with healthy oral buccal mucosa.
60 Paraffin wax embedded sections of different grades of OSMF, 10 cases of normal oral mucosa were taken from archival collections. All paraffin sections to be immunohistochemically stained assessed visually using a standard compound microscope and by image analysis software.
Mainly COL type I trimer (COL I) presence seems more in localization and quantity in all samples of OSMF and normal mucosa. The amount of COL I increased in deposition of collagen I, as the severity of the disease intensified. The increase in COL I intensity of the expression due to higher amount of collagen I present in Grade II, Grade III in respect to control group.
Type I COL slowly accumulated/deposited with increasing grades of OSMF, as supported by the increase in intensity of expression. OSMF seems a disorder occurring mainly due to increase of matured collagen type I.
