Liver involvement in sickle cell disease may take place due to the primary disease itself or to secondary conditions such as iron overload, viral hepatitis and cholelithiasis.
to investigate the liver function tests in steady state adult SCD patients.
fifty (n=50) adult SCD patients in steady state and fifty five (n=55) controls were enrolled for this study. Liver function tests was assessed in these subjects
The serum total bilirubin, aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), direct and indirect bilirubin and total protein were significantly increased in SCD patients (P <0.05) compared with controls. Serum iron and ferritin were higher in SCD patients with hepatic disease (p<0.05), which might be due to iron overload. Whereas serum Transferrin and Total Iron Binding Capacity were low in these patients.
Chronic liver injury in patients with sickle cell disease seems to be a multifactorial phenomenon depending mostly on various factors.
Liver function test, sickle cell anemia, serum iron
