Lipid Profile and C-Reactive Protein in Male Normotensive and Hypertensive Individuals-A Comparative Study

Abstract

Hypertension is a risk factor for many conditions like stroke, heart failure, coronary heart diseases, peripheral vascular diseases and chronic renal diseases. Chronic inflammation could be an independent risk factor for high blood pressure. Patients with elevated basal levels of C-reactive protein [CRP] are at an increased risk of hypertension and stroke. Most of the cardiac events are associated with altered lipid profile or dyslipidemia.

to determine the lipid profile and C-reactive protein in normotensive and hypertensive individuals and to find any association is present between them.

This study was conducted on 100 male patients aged between 40-60years. One group included 50 subjects with normal blood pressure levels and no prior history of hypertension. The other group composed of 50 known hypertensive individuals on medication for hypertension. Blood pressure was recorded by sphygmomanometer and estimation of C-reactive protein and lipid profile was done for all study subjects. Results obtained were statistically analyzed using students unpaired t test and p value <0.001 and < 0.05 were considered significant.

In our study we found raised levels of CRP, blood pressure, total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, VLDL in hypertensive group. This finding was statistically significant. HDL level was decreased in hypertensive group and was statistically significant.

CRP and dyslipidemia was observed in hypertensive group. Hence regular monitoring of blood pressure and estimation of CRP and lipid profile levels can prevent cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.
