CKD is devastating end stage organ dysfunction with multiple systemic ill effects. Pulmonary dysfunction is an important cause of mortality and morbidity. The study aims at investigating the pulmonary dysfunction and its progression in various stages of CKD.
To study pulmonary function test in chronic kidney disease and to correlate findings in pulmonary function test with stages of chronic kidney disease
90 random patients of different stages of CKD was selected from patients admitted in GRMC, Gwalior.30 age and sex matched controls were selected. Pulmonary fuction tests were done in both groups and compared.
Most commonly observed PFT pattern was Mild restrictive [20 (22.22%)] followed by moderate restrictive [19 (21.11%)]. Out of 60 patients with mild restrictive pattern, 10 (50%) belong to stage 3, 5 (25%) belong to stage 4, 4 (20%) belong to stage 2 and 1 (5%) belong to stage 5 CKD whereas, out of 19 patients with moderate restrictive pattern, 9 (47.36%) belong to stage 5 and 5 (26.31%) each belong to stage 2 and 3 respectively. Out of 10 patients with moderately severe restrictive pattern 5 (50%) in each belong to stage 4 and 5 respectively. All three severe restrictive pattern patients belong to stage 5 CKD.
CKD cause pulmonary dysfunction in the form of restrictive lung disease. The severity of pulmonary dysfunction is more severe in severe stages of CKD
