In Vitro Evaluation of the Antimicrobial Effects of a Root Canal Sealer Antibiotic Combination against Enterococcus Faecalis

Abstract

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the antimicrobial effects of three different antibiotics at different concentrations when added to zinc oxide eugenol sealer against Entereococcus faecalis.

Three antibiotics: amoxicillin, augmentin and tinimox, at different concentrations of 1%,10%,25% were added separately to zinc oxide eugenol sealer. Fifteen brain heart infusion agar plates were inoculated with E.faecalis and sterile paper discs containing sealer-antibiotic combination of different concentrations were randomly assigned to the inoculated plates. Sealer on a sterile paper disc and a blank sterile paper disc served as controls. The plates were incubated at 37°C for 48 hours and zones of inhibition were measured. The groups were combined and data analysis using one- way ANOVA test was performed.

Results revealed that Augmentin was best suited and had higher efficacy at different concentrations. However, 1% concentration did not produce the optimum results. Optimum results were obtained at 10% concentration in Novamox while in Tinimox and Augmentin it was achieved at 25%. As for Sealer as well as Paper disc the values were found to be 0.

The present study found that different combinations of amoxycillin at different concentrations when added to zinc oxide eugenol sealer enhanced antimicrobial activity of sealer against E. faecalis.
