Research in the field of science and technology has shown that bacteria can communicate with each other. This communication is population-density dependent and involves signalling molecules that can diffuse between the bacterial cells. The process of communication is called ‘quorum sensing’. Different species of bacteria are important in the composition of dental plaque. Many Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria communicate using small diffusible signal molecules called auto inducers. The interference with these signalling systems, also known as Quorum Quenching, represents a promising strategy to tackle bacterial infections.
