A Study of Antimicrobial Susceptibility Pattern of Common Isolates from Rural Western Uttar Pradesh

Abstract

In this era of ever emerging bacterial resistance to antibiotics, irrational antibiotic prescribing has emerged as a major cause owing to various prescribing trends in urban and rural areas. the study was conducted to know resistance Pattern of common bacterial pathogens like Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella in rural setting. A total of 846 samples of various types were cultured and sensitivity of bacteria was analyzed using modified Kirby-Bauer method. Study found that sensitivity of bacteria from rural areas was less than that from the urban counterparts. Escherichia coli was maximally sensitive to Meropenem (91%) and least sensitive to Amoxyclav(22%). Klebsiella was maximally sensitive to Meropenem (61%) and least sensitive to Amoxyclav(24%) and lastly Staphylococcus aureus was completely sensitive to Vancomycin (100%) where as least sensitive to Azithromycin (37%). The prebalence o MRSA was also high at 74%.
