Low birth weight is one of the most important causes for the high infant mortality rate. Survey reveals that, 15.3% of the infant mortality rate is caused due to low birth weight.
to assess the knowledge of mothers regarding care of low birth weight babies.
Descriptive survey design was used and selected the primipara mothers having birth weight of between 1 to 2.4 kg admitted in NICU at Sri Gokulam hospital by using non-probability purposive sampling technique. Thirty samples were included and data were collected using Demographic variables and Structured Interview Schedule. Need based education was given to mothers regarding care of low birth weight babies.
Highest percentage (70%) of Primipara mothers had moderately adequate knowledge on care of LBW babies. Mother's had mean value of 18.16±3.81 and mean% was 56.75%. There was no association found between demographic variables and knowledge scores.
level of knowledge has to be increased to the mothers through various means as the care of low birth weight babies is very important and challenging in today's world.
