A Study of Onychomycosis in a Tertiary Care Hopsital in Hyderabad

Abstract

Onychomycosis is one of the most common fungal diseases affecting nail caused by dermatophytes, yeasts and non-dermatophyte molds. Clinical presentation and predisposing factors such as diabetes mellitus, history of nail trauma has a prognostic significance. Early diagnosis and treatment is important as recurrence rate is high with onychomycosis.

A prospective study was done on 150 cases for duration of one and half year i.e. from April 2014 to September 2015 in the Department of Microbiology in a tertiary care hospital, Hyderabad. All the cases of clinically suspected onychomycosis were included. Finger Nail and toe nail samples were collected for direct KOH Mount and culture.

Onychomycosis was more common in 31–40 years (27.6%) and male to female ratio was 1: 2.4. Among 150 cases,110 (73.3%) were positive for KOH Mount/culture and 65 cases (43.3%) were positive by both culture and microscopy, The infection was more common in finger nails (56.9%) than toe nails (23%). Candida albicans was most commonly isolated species (56.7%). Among the nondermatophyte molds, Aspergillus species was isolated in 29.7% patients. Dermatophytes were isolated in 5.4%.

In the present study of Onychomycosis both microscopy and culture was observed in 65 cases (43.3%) cases and the most common isolates were Candida species followed by nondermatophytes molds.
