Tuberculosis (TB) is a top infectious disease killer worldwide. Globally in 2014, an estimated 480 000 people developed multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB). The Millennium Development Goal target of halting and reversing the TB epidemic by 2015 has been met globally.
1. To study the demographic profile of study population. 2. To find the association between smoking and Diabetes mellitus among pulmonary tuberculosis patients.
This was a community based cross sectional study carried out in the tuberculosis unit (TU) area of Eluru, Andhra Pradesh. during the period from 1st July 2014 to 31st June 2015. All new pulmonary tuberculosis patients in the represented DMC areas of Eluru TU were covered. Sample size was estimated at 5% level of significance with an allowable error of 18%. Thus, the calculated study sample was 287 subjects. Simple random sampling method was used. Importance of the study was explained to the participants and informed consent was taken. Results were analyzed and necessary statistical tests like proportions and chi square tests were applied.
Out of 287 individuals, 185 males and 102 were females. Maximum prevalence of diabetes Mellitus was observed in 18–30 years of age group among pulmonary Tuberculosis patients. There was significant association was found between number of cigars and prevalence of diabetes among pulmonary tuberculosis patients (P<0.01).
Based on the above study results, maximum prevalence of diabetes mellitus was noticed among smokers. Type of smoking, duration of smoking and high socio economic status significantly associated with diabetes among TB patients. Smoking cessation activities and adopting healthy life styles definitely reduce the incidence of Diabetes among TB patients.
