A Study on Burkholderia Cepacia Isolates from Various Clinical Samples and their Antibiotic Sensitivity Pattern

Abstract

Burkholderia cepacia is an organism of low virulence which can cause nosocomial infection. Nosocomial infections caused by Burkholderia cepacia includes blood stream infections, pneumonia, surgical site infections and genitourinary infections. BCC bacteraemia should be considered in febrile patients with nosocomial infections, especially those who have an indwelling catheter, are on ventilators or have Cystic Fibrosis or immune dysfunction. Burkholderia is resistant to many antibiotics including polymixins, amino glycosides, chloramphenicol and disinfectants including povidone iodine and chlorehexidine.

A total of 21(9.54%) isolates of B.cepacia obtained were included in the study and identification through VITEK 2 system using gram negative ID cards (BIOMERIEUX), cultural characteristics, Antibiotic sensitivity pattern determined by measuring the MIC values in VITEK 2 System (BIOMERIEUX) was done.

Out of 220 clinical samples, 21(9.54%) isolates of B.cepacia were obtained. Maximum patients isolated were from ICU'S (52.38%). Maximum sensitivity was seen with meropenam (90.47%), ceftazidime (90.47%), minocycline (85.71%), levofloxacin (80.95%) and Tigecycline (71.42%).

The study reveals that B.cepacia is a nosocomial pathogen affecting patients mainly admitted in ICU's and showing maximum sensitivity to Ceftazidime, Meropenam and Minocycline.
