Study of intestinal parasitic infections among HIV-Seropositive cases

Abstract

Intestinal opportunistic parasitic infections are the major cause of diarrheal disease in Human Immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected patients in developing countries like India. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections in patients living with HIV/AIDS.

Out of 70 stool samples, 57seropositive HIV positive had parasitic infection and examined microscopically for ova and cyst using wet mount preparations and stained by various staining method including Modified acid fast stain, Rapid safranin methylene blue method, Auramine-phenol stain, Modified trichrome stain and Acid fast trichrome stain.

The parasites identified were Cryptosporidia in 34(60%) followed by Microsporidia 9(15%), Cyclospora 4(7%), Isospora belli 3(5%), Entamoeba histolytica 3(5%), Ascaris lumbricoids 2(4%) and Entamoeba coli 2 (4%). Parasitic density was higher among the patients having lower CD4 T cells counts (<200/μl). Also, the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infection was decreasing with improvement in CD4 cell count. Early detection of intestinal parasitic infection in HIV patients may help to treat the patients, avoid the serious consequences of infection and also prevent transmission.
