Abstract

The prevalence of group A rotavirus (GARV) in diarrhoeic goat kids was investigated in Uttar Pradesh, India by RNA-Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (RNA-PAGE) and reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) technique. A total of one hundred twenty samples were collected from two organized farms (Barbari and Jamunapari) in Mathura. Sixteen and fourteen cases were detected positive for GARV by RT-PCR and RNA-PAGE, respectively. The overall prevalence rate of GARV was found to be 15.0% and 13.33% by RT-PCR and RNA-PAGE, respectively. The Jamunapari kids showed less prevalence rate of GARV (8.88%; 4/45) than Barbari goat kids (18.66%; 14/75), but no significant difference between sexes was recorded. The study revealed that there is high prevalence of GARV in diarrhoeic goats which can pose threat to animals as well as humans. Further studies are required to establish the relationship between animals and humans by detailed epidemiological and molecular typing studies.
