Emergence of Resistance Against Benzimidazole Group of Drugs in Gastrointestinal Nematodes of Sheep in Mathura

Abstract

A study was carried out from July 2010 to March 2011 with an objective to evaluate the efficacy of three anthelmintics of benzimidazole group (albandazole, fenbendazole and oxfendazole) in one organized Madhurikund sheep farm and three unorganized sheep farms of Balajipuram, Aurangabad and Damodarpura villages of Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh. Gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) in all sheep farms were found resistant to fenbendazole with FECR 75.1–88.5%, while albandazole resistance was suspected in three farms with FECR 86.6–92.5% Oxfendazole was found susceptible to GIN in all selected sheep farms with FECR 96.80–98.64%. Larval culture examination revealed the predominance of Haemonchus spp. followed by Trichostrongylus spp., Oesophagostomum spp., and Strongyloides spp. As only a few broad spectrum anthelmintics are available, regular monitoring for their efficacy is important to delay emergence of resistance. The information from this study generated important data for timely management of benzimidazole resistance in parasites.
