Abstract

Chicken astrovirus (CAstV) has been associated with enteric disorders, poor growth and runting-stunting syndrome, affecting the productivity of chickens. Virus has been reported to be prevalent in commercial broilers in India during 2011 and 2012. Limited data are available regarding sero-prevalence of this disease in India. The present study has targeted broiler breeder population from eight states of India, where 441 serum samples were collected and CAstV antibodies were measured with an ELISA test. The outcome of the study showed that 68.03% of the serum tested were positive for chicken astrovirus infection. The study suggests that chicken astrovirus is highly prevalent in broiler breeder flocks in India.
