Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in aquaculture and livestock is seen as a prominent threat to UN Sustainable Development Goals as it can affect farmers’ livelihood. “Strengthening knowledge and evidence through surveillance” is one of six priority areas listed under India's National Action Plan on AMR. Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) initiated a Network Research Programme for AMR surveillance in 2018 for livestock and fisheries in the country, named as Indian Network for Fisheries and Animal Antimicrobial Resistance (INFAAR), in technical cooperation with Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). We present the roadmap for AMR surveillance in aquaculture and livestock for the next five years. Sector-specific, commodity-specific and region-specific information on the burden of AMR and its trends in farmed animals and fish would be generated against a panel of antimicrobials used in animal health and public health. INFAAR will help in promoting food production by managing fish/animal health and ensure safe food production for human consumption without the risk of AMR transmission to humans through the food chain.
