Abstract

Ethnoveterinary Medicine (EVM) provides a simple, cost-effective and efficacious option for the management of common ailments of dairy animals of the Indian livestock farmers, majority of whom are marginal or landless. EVM has the immense potential in production of safe milk as it plays an important role in minimizing the use of drugs specially antimicrobials, which in turn helps in stalling the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), an emerging public health concern. In the present study, attempts have been made to propagate the use of EVM for dairy animals against about 26 common ailments in around 25 milk union/producer companies located in 9 different states. Around 81.5% symptomatic recovery rate was recorded after use of EVM in approximately 5.61 lakhs of clinical cases.
