Religiosity, Problem-solving, Social Support, Needs Satisfaction, Goal Attainment and Suicidal Tendency in an Iranian Sample

Abstract

The purpose of this research study was to examine the effect of religiosity, need satisfaction, social support, problem solving skills, goal altainmel1t, ethnicity, immigration, socio economic status, and history o(mental disorder and suicide on suicidal tendency. Participants included 600 adolescents and youth that were randomly selected from the Shiraz city using a survey design. The data ofthe study were collected using a demographic questionnaire, Religiosity Inventory, Problem Solving Skills Inventory, Social Support. Inventory, Needs Satisfaction Inventory, Goal Attainments Inventory, and Suicidal Tendency Inventory. The results showed that religiosity, need satisfaction, social support, problem solving skills, goal attainment, ethnicity, immigration, socio economic status, and history of mental disorder and suicide have significant effects on suicidal tendency. Multiple regressions by stepwise method indicated needs satisfaction, problem solving skills, goal attainment, social support, and gender explained 58 percent of suicidal tendency variation. Findings explained within a global psychic distress model toward suicidality.
