Abstract

A simplified regulated breathing treatment for stuttering involving awareness (response detection) competing response and relaxation training was implemented with a 26-year-old Ibo speaking woman who stutters. Treatment was implemented in two one hour treatment sessions. From an audio taped speech samples, percentage words stuttered (% WS) and words per minute (WPM) were calculated, and self-report measure of stuttering was administered. The procedure resulted in substantial decrease in stuttering at the criterion of less than 3% stuttered words. Also client's self-rating of own stuttering using the Wright and Ayre Stuttering Self-rating Profile (WASSP: Wright and Ayre 2000) showed highly significant decrease in stuttering (p <01). The cross-cultural utility of regulated breathing is highlighted.
