Abstract

The aim of the present study is to explore the relationship of Facebook addiction with sensation seeking, and different pathological personality trait; and how far sensation seeking and pathological personality traits predict Facebook addiction. One hundred twenty-eight (128) undergraduate and postgraduate Facebook addicted students were selected for the study from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi (India) using purposive sampling technique. All participants were assessed on Bergen Facebook Addiction Scale (BFAS), Sensation Seeking Scale, and Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-III (MCMI-III). Data were statistically analyzed using Pearson Product Moment method of Correlation and Stepwise Multiple Regression. Results revealed that Sensation seeking and its dimensions boredom and disinhibition are positively correlated with facebook addiction, and further disinhibition emerged as a significant predictor of facebook addiction. Pathological personality traits such as borderline, dependent, depressive, schizotypal, paranoid, and narcissistic are positively correlated with face book addiction. The compulsive personality trait is negatively correlated with face book addiction. Depressive and paranoid personality traits were found to be the predictors of face book addiction.
