Abstract

Cancer is class of diseases characterized by out of control cell growth and person sufering faces tremendous stress and pain. The purpose of the study is to compare perceived stress, coping style of breast cancer patients with mastectomy and without mastectomy. A total sample of 80 female breast cancer patients, out of which 40 breast cancer patient who have undergone mastectomy and 40 who have not undergone mastectomy were selected from OPD services of Department of Oncology of Govt. Medical College and Hospital. Participants were administered socio-demographic and clinical data sheet to acknowledge their socio demographic and clinical details. They were administered Perceived Stress Scale and Multidimensional Coping Inventory to assess perceived stress and coping of them. The results showed statistically signiicant diference between the two groups with regards to perceived stress which indicated that the group without mastectomy had more perceived stress compared to those with mastectomy. From our present study, it can be concluded that the group without mastectomy had more perceived stress compared to the group of breast cancer patients with mastectomy. The study also gives the idea that medication, domicile, occupation and duration were not the predictive factors of perceived stress and coping for both the group.
