Neuropsychological rehabilitation in alzheimer's disease: Two case studies

Abstract

Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia occurring in elderly population. The patients with Alzheimer's disease often sufer impairments in attention, memory, speed of information processing, language, visuo-spatial ability, executive functioning as well as in daily life activities. Those impairments need to be remediated as these have signiicant impact on their social and occupational functioning. Neuropsychological rehabilitation mainly focuses on the improvement of basic abilities which in turn enhance cognitive functioning. Though a huge body of research has focused on pharmacological treatment of the disease, relatively a small number of study has focused on cognitive rehabilitation of these patients, especially so in Kolkata. The purpose of this study was to explore the efectiveness of a comprehensive neuropsychological rehabilitation program (BRAINWAVE-R) to remediate cognitive impairment after baseline assessments. Four participants, diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease were approached after receiving consent. A detailed pre-assessment (for a period of 1 month) of cognitive functioning and day to day functioning was conducted on two of them followed by rehabilitation training program for the period of 6 months. Post intervention impact was seen in their cognitive functioning. Results reveal the efectiveness of rehabilitation training program in improving cognitive functioning and enhancement of instrumental activities.
