The Mental Healthcare Act 2017 has replaced the Mental Health Act 1987. Present Act focuses on the right of patients in accordance to United Nations Conventions of Human Rights for Person with Disabilities. It elaborates provisions for service utilizers as well as service providers. The Act defines Clinical Psychologists and specifies their role and responsibilities as mental health professionals. The difference between the Mental Health Act 1987 and Mental Healthcare Act 2017 and important new provisions in the 2017 Act is discussed in the present article.
