Cancer cervix is one of the leading malignancies in developing countries including India. A number of studies have linked BMI with increased risk/complications of various cancers. In the current study an attempt has been made to evaluate correlation between BMI & cervical neoplasia (SIL and early cancer cervix).
The study was conducted on 103 subjects consisting of 29 cases of cytologically proven SIL, 30 cases of histologically proven early carcinoma cervix and 44 cytologically proven normal healthy. Height and weight of study subjects was measured and BMI was calculated using the National Institute of Health online calculator and statistical analysis was performed using SPSS and Microsoft Excel software.
There was no significant decrease in mean values of BMI in SIL compared to control, (20.82 kg/m2; 95% CI =19.59–22.05 kg/m2 in SIL vs 21.33 kg/m2; 95% CI =20.14–22.53 kg/m2 in controls; P=0.57). While this decrease was highly significant for early cancer compared to controls (19.0 kg/m2; 95% CI =17.73–20.27 kg/m2 in early cancer vs 21.25 kg/m2; 95% CI =20.1–22.41 kg/m2 in controls; P=0.005). Odds for early cancer cases were significantly greater than those of Inter-Quartile Range (IQR) in controls [OR (95% CI); p value = 4.82 (1.41–16.39); 0.01] while that for SIL did not reveal a significant trend (P=0.43).
A significant decrease in BMI is seen in non-obese, non-diabetic early cancer cervix (Stage-I and Stage-II).
