Past few decades have witnessed an increased interest in risk elements that enhance the occurrence of periodontal diseases. These have been appropriately used in various periodontal risk assessment models to predict not only the present and future disease activity but also risk susceptibility. These models include periodontal risk calculator (PRC), periodontal assessment tool (PAT), periodontal risk assessment (PRA) and its modifications, DentoRisk and self assessment tools. These are based on a certain algorithm which assigns weights to risk elements and predicts risk. The use of these models will improve risk assessment, treatment planning and reduce the cost of health care.
