Diabetes disease is now highly visible across all sections of society within India. This study considers the prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus and some related socio-demographic factors among peoples of Meerut during 2008–2010.
This is a Cross sectional-hospital-based study, carried out among 714 diabetic patients between < 20 and > 60 years of age. Data on socio-demographic factors were collected using questionnaire.
In this study 355 (49.7%) females and 359 (50.3%) males were studied. The mean age of the respondents was 51.92 years. Maximum 382 (53.5%) of the respondents were in the age group of 40–60 years. 290 (40.6%) patients were visiting from the rural areas and 424 (59.4%) patients from the urban areas.
Data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS for Window, version 21.0). Prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus and socio-demographic factors was expressed as percentage. Association between gender of Diabetes Mellitus and place of residence, years and age was assessed with Chi square test. Variables showing statistically significant association with the outcome variables p-value of <0.05 were considered.
Diabetes Mellitus isone of the biggest health problems in rural and urban India due to influenced by socio-demographic factors and changing lifestyle beviour.
