Increase in resistance of frequently found uropathogens viz. E. coli, Klebsiella for various known and unknown reasons is an alarming situation as it leaves us with almost nil treatment options for the patients and increased rates of infection with multidrug resistant organisms. Hence this study was done to see the state of affairs in NCR region so as to try to use our remaining reserve of antibiotics with utmost care.
1705 urine samples were processed in the microbiology laboratory according to standard technique and antibiotic sensitivity was put using the Kirby Bauer disc diffusion method.
60% resistance was observed against cotrimoxazole, 75% against ofloxacin and 52% against ceftriaxone which are the most commonly used drugs for empirical therapy. Also 20% resistance against piperacillin tazobactam and meropenem are a major cause of concern. Against all this resistance, 22% resistance against nitrofurantoin shows this age old drug is still effective.
