Abstract

Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is a simple, rapid, cost effective and useful method for diagnostic evaluation of salivary gland lesions due to their superficial nature and easy accessibility.

To study the cytomorphological patterns of the salivary gland lesions and to perform histopathological correlation.

A retrospective study of 120 cases was done at pathology department, B. J. Medical college, Ahmedabad from June 2017 to June 2018. The cases for which both cytological and Histopathological diagnosis were available was selected. FNAC results compared with histological diagnosis.

FNAC shows among the total cases, 85cases(80.75) were benign and 10 cases (9.5%) were malignant. Histopathological finding shows 85 cases benign and 10cases malignant. Sensitivity-79%, specificity-97.6%, accuracy of our study to diagnose malignant lesion-97.6%.

The high accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of FNAC makes it a useful and reliable screening and diagnostic procedure in case of salivary gland lesions especially in District Hospitals.
