Abstract

Fine needle aspiration cytology is an effective modality for diagnosis of breast lesions. It is a simple, rapid and safe method to diagnose breast lesions. It has high sensitivity and specificity.

The aim of the present study was to correlate cytological findings with histopathological findings and to determine the accuracy of FNAC in the diagnosis of breast lesions.

The present study consist of total 250 breast aspirates from January 2018 to june 2018 in pathology department, of B.J. Medical Collage civil hospital Ahmedabad and Histo-cytological correlations were obtained in 120 cases.

Of the 250 cases, 130 were benign, 52 malignant, 12 suspicious, 30 were inflammatory and 26 were other non neoplastic smears. Cytological and histological correlation found in 120 cases out of 250 cases. Fibroadenoma was the commonest benign lesion noted in the age group 21–30 years and infiltrating ductal carcinoma was the most common malignant lesion. Accuracy of the present study as: sensitivity 94.4%, specificity 100%, positive predictive value 100%, negative predictive value 97.6% and efficiency 98.3%.

Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of breast lesions serves as rapid, economical and reliable tool for diagnosis of palpable breast lesions and the cytopathological examination of these lesions before operation or treatment serves as an important modality.
