Comparative study of incidence of glial tumors and correlation between squash preparation and histopathology.
(1) To study the incidence and histopthological spectrum of various glial tumors.
(2) To study the correlation of routine histopathology, frozen section (FS) and squash preparation in the diagnosis of glial tumors.
Total 96 cases studied retrospectively, clinically and radiologically diagnosed as CNS neoplasm were sent for frozen section evalution followed by routine biopsy. Both the sections were stained by H & E and evaluated for incidence as well as recent WHO grading of various subtype of glial tumors. A comparison was done between diagnosis on frozen sections and on routine paraffin sections to assess the concordance and discordance rates.
The highest number of cases received and reported on frozen section and squash preparation followed by confirmation on routine histopathology were of Astrocytoma followed by meningioma and ependymoma.
Intraoperative squash preparation for diagnosis of the nature of central nervous system lesions is a rapid and valuable technique with a high degree of accuracy. It is a useful adjunct to intraoperative histologic diagnosis and should be attempted for all CNS lesions as far as possible. In addition, routine paraffin section report still maintains an upper edge over frozen section as far as diagnostic accuracy is concerned.
