Plasma protein profile in anoestrus and suboestrus holstein friesian cows without and with GNRH and PGF2α therapy on day 49 postpartum

Abstract

Plasma proteins profile was monitored in 24 normally calved HF cows over first 18 weeks postpartum without and with GnRH and PGF2α treatment on day 49 in anoestrus and suboestrus animals, respectively. Six cows each anoestrus and suboestrus were treated with single i/m injection of 5 ml Receptal (GnRH analogue) and 5 ml Lutalyse (PGF2α) on day 49–55 postpartum, respectively, keeping 6 animals of same status as control. The response to both the treatments was moderate to good as 50.00 and 83.33% of GnRH and PGF2α treated cows responded and came in oestrus by mean interval of 31.33±9.37 and 2.50±0.22 days, and 100 and 40% of them conceived at induced oestrus as against 00.00 and 16.67% conception rate with a mean oestrus interval of 37.00±5.87 and 15.33±3.48 days in control groups. GnRH therapy induced delayed response but with ovulatory oestrus as compared to prompt and better oestrus response and low conception with PGF2α therapy at day 49 postpartum. The overall mean plasma concentrations of total proteins, albumin, globulin and A:G ratio recorded in anoestrus and suboestrus cows were 6.80±0.10 and 6.72±0.10 g/dl, 3.15±0.06 and 2.94±0.04 g/dl, 3.63±0.04 and 3.75±0.08 g/dl, and 0.91±0.02 and 0.81±0.02, respectively. None of these plasma traits differed significantly between anoestrus and suboestrus animals, overall or even at different biweekly intervals postpartum. The GnRH and PGF2α treated and control groups as well as conceiving and non-conceiving cows did not reveal any variation in their plasma total proteins or its fractions between groups or between weeks postpartum. The poor response to hormonal therapy in HF cows of both anoestrus and suboestrus groups might be attributed to their relatively low levels of plasma total protein, albumin and globulin and an elevated A:G ratio.
