To assess the periodontal health status of institutionalized mentally challenged individuals of Uttar Pradesh, India.
This was a descriptive cross sectional study conducted on institutionalized mentally challenged subjects. A pretested structured proforma was used for obtaining relevant information.
Total 922 subjects were included in the study, 4 to 48 years old with a mean age of 18.76 ±7.96 years. Maximum subjects i.e.62.04% were in the age group of 11–20 years. Male subjects (77.66%) were higher than female subjects (22.34%). Oral hygiene status (OHI-S) was fair (1.97 ± 1.13). The Oral Hygiene Index-Simplified (OHI-S) score increased with the age. As per the Community Periodontal Index (CPI) value, 55.56% subjects had calculus. Proportion of population having CPI score ‘2′ increased with age
The institutionalized mentally challenged individuals in Uttar Pradesh have fair oral hygiene. The periodontal conditions of these subjects worsen with the age.
