Demographic Distribution of Pediatric Fracture at a Tertiary Care Centre in Western U.P.

Abstract

Trauma is a major cause of childhood morbidity and mortality worldwide. We conducted this study to provide information on demographic distribution of childhood fractures reporting at a tertiary care centre.

Retrospective study conducted in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, of a tertiary care teaching hospital of Western U.P.

Clinical details of all pediatric patients with fracture and dislocation who attended orthopedic Outpatient department, casualty and who were hospitalized between Jan 2009 to Jan 2010 were recorded from the case files, casualty admission register and operative records. The data was analyzed with special reference to age, sex, mode of injuries, type and number of bone fracture, associated injuries and treatment given.

Out of 190 cases included in our study 61.5% were males (n=117) and 38.42% were females (n=73). Maximum cases were in age group of 6 to 12 years (n=102). Fracture due to fall was the most common cause (52.63%) followed by during playing (28.4%) and Roadside accidents (13.68%). The most common bones fractured were radius/ulna (45.26%) and humerus (30.52%). There were 5.26% cases of open fractures (n=10), 14.2% cases of Physeal injuries (n=27) and 1.57% cases of traumatic amputation (n=3).

Single bone fracture was present in 61.5% cases (n=116), two bone fractures in 33.68% (n=64) and multiple fractures in 5.26% cases (n=10). Out of 190 cases 6 patients (3.15%) left the hospital against medical advice, 35.26% were managed conservatively (n=67) and 53.68% cases (n=102) underwent major surgery while 7.84% cases (n=15) were managed with minor surgery.
