A Comparative Study of Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy with Drain VS No Drain

History of putting drain intraperitoneally after surgery is as older as history of surgery itself. Traditions dictate that the drain should be left in the abdomen (in sub hepatic space) following cholecystectomy. We aimed to investigate the appropriateness of inserting the intraperitoneal drainage tube after LC & conducted a randomized clinical trial comparing no drain versus drain in patient who had undergone LC.

To study the benefits & harms of placing a routine drain in the case of LC. To evaluate the pattern of complication, patient tolerance, comfort & morbidity, length of hospital stay.

The study was carried out from January 2010 to January 2011 at Unit I, Department of Surgery, Santosh Medical College & Hospital, Ghaziabad, U.P.

Total number of 64 patients, were enrolled and LC was done. The patients were divided into group A and B, with 29 & 35 patients in each groups respectively. Romovac suction drain was inserted after LC in subheptic space in Group A, and no drain tube was placed in group B patients. Postoperatively both groups were given the same antibiotics.

Mortality rate in both groups was zero. Group A had 2cases of infected collection and 5cases of wound infection. Group B had 1case of collection & 2cases of wound infection. Mean stay was more in group A as compared to group B.

Routine drainage is unnecessary after LC
