Abstract

This study was done to evaluate epidemiology, clinical profile of eclamptic patients and the effect of current intervention strategy for eclampsia on maternal and perinatal outcome.

Analysis of case records of all eclampsia cases was done from September 2011 to August 2013 (over a period of 2 years) in Obstetrics and Gynaecology department at the School of Medical Sciences & Research, Sharda Hospital, Greater Noida, U.P.

Incidence of eclampsia was found to be 1.6%. It was primarily a disease of young women of age group 21–25 years (72.7%) and primigravida (81.8%). There was no antenatal care in 90.9% and 68.2% presented with antepartum eclampsia. Gestational age was less than 36 weeks in (72.7%). Caesarean delivery was the predominant mode of delivery in 63.6%. There was no maternal mortality and the perinatal mortality was recorded as 36.4%.

Eclampsia is a life threatening complication of pregnancy. It appears that current intervention strategy in tertiary care hospital is effective in reducing maternal mortality & morbidity but perinatal outcome still needs to be improved. However an improvement in antenatal care, upgrading the neonatal facility and early delivery by caesarean section can improve the perinatal outcome.
