Pseudocyst of the auricle is a cutaneous cystic swelling filled with serous fluid. Characterized by a fluctuant, tense, non inflammatory swelling on the upper half of the ear. It occurs spontaneously or following surgery or trauma with high propensity for recurrence.
The aim of the study was to compare intralesional triamcinolone injection with aspiration and buttoning of pseudocyst in preventing recurrence.
It is a prospective study was two groups were compared for recurrence of pseudocyst of auricle by two different modalities of intervention.
Total of 30 patients with pseudocyst of auricle were taken and randomized into two equal groups each comprising of 15. The technique of intra-lesional injection of triamcinolone after aspirating the fluid was followed in one group as against aspiration and Buttoning in another group. They were followed up to 6 months for recurrence.
Out of 15 patients who underwent Buttoning and pressure dressing 11 (75.6%) were found to have recurrence(9 males and 2 females) as against 3(20.3%) among the patients who were subjected to triamcinolone injection(all males). It was seen 50% of patients who underwent Buttoning and pressure dressing came with recurrence within first month.
Intralesional injection of triamcinolone is a better treatment option in preventing recurrence of auricular pseudocyst than aspiration and Buttoning.
