Incidence of Mastication Pain Following Tympanomastoid Surgery

To determine the incidence of pain in ipsalateral temporal area following tympanoplasty with or without mastoidectomy with temporalis Fascia graft harvesting.

50 patients who undergone tympanoplasty with or Without mastoidectomy with harvesting of temporalis fascia graft in our Institution from September 2012 to august 2013 were followed for 3 months to Determine the incidence of pain in ipsalateral temporal region.

among 50 patients, 29 patients reported significant pain in the ipsalateral temporal region during first postoperative week. 21 patients did not report any pain. At 4th postoperative week only 13 patients continued with Mild discomfort during mastication and by the 8th postoperative only 2 patients Had symptoms of discomfort and by the end of 3rd postoperative all patients Where free from symptoms of pain and discomfort while mastication.

postoperative pain in the temporal region following tympanoplasty with temporalis fascia graft harvesting can cause significant discomfort to the patient especially during immediate postoperative periods therefore it is advised to use minimal electro cautery to prevent tissue damage and adhesion formation leading to mastication pain.
