Abstract

Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy is a worldwide accepted gold standard treatment of cholelithiasis. Though it is a routine procedure, it is not free from complications. The complications of any surgery in India are under-reported. Hemorrhage due to various reasons in Calot's Triangle is common but preventable. Bleeding can vary from a minor ooze to torrential hemorrhage. This study analyzed the frequency of these complications, detection, management and measures to prevent them.

To evaluate frequency of bleeding complications occurring per - operatively in patients undergoing Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy, its detection, management and measures to prevent these Bleeding Complications

Design and Duration: Prospective study from February 2013 to January 2014.

Setting: Department of Surgery, Saraswathi Institute of Medical Sciences, Hapur, UP.

Patients: All patients undergoing Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy.

One hundred and forty four patients underwent Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy in the study period. Out of these 124 (86.11%) were females and 20 (13.89%) were males. Most of the patients 125 (86.81%) were in age group between 25 to 40 years. In our study 9 (6.25%) cases required conversion to open cholecystectomy, out of which one (0.69%) conversion was due to bleeding from cystic artery. Twenty four patients were having Acute Cholecystitis with Cholelithiasis. Bleeding complications due to injury in Calot's triangle were mostly due to acute cholecystitis and abnormal Calot's triangle anatomy.

Bleeding complications due to injury in Calot's triangle were mostly due to acute cholecystitis and abnormal Calot's triangle anatomy. Hemorrhage due to various structures in Calot's Triangle is common but preventable.
