Correlative Study of Length of Dorsum of Nose with Sphenoid Air Sinus in South Indian Adult Male Population (Cadaveric Study)

35 Non-Pathological Adult Male Cadavers are selected for study the mean correlative Length of dorsum of nose (Nasal height) is 50.6 (SD=5.0) and Mean value of antero- Posterior diameter 20.7mm (SD = 1.6) and mean breadth of (transverse diameter)of Sphenoid sinus is 16.2 (SD 1.7) measured with digital caliper, both measurements are highly significant (P<0.01).

This correlative study will certainly help the neuro surgeon to predict or explore the size and shape of the sphenoid air sinus by measuring the length of dorsum of nose during trans-axial hypo pysectomy because of anatomical proximity of the sphenoidal sinus. Pituitary fossa is approached through Sphenoidal sinus (1).moreover this study will also help the radiologist to correlate his findings of M.R.I, CT scan as these images do not give exact size and shape of sphenoidal sinus. Apart from this, infection of the sphenoidal sinus can produce papillodema or chocked disc, retrobulbar neuritis(2) spontaneous sphenoidal sinus CSF fistula (3), sixth nerve palsy followed by burry vision and diplopia (4) primary malignancies (Non -hodg kins lymphoma)usually develop from the epithelium of sphenoidal sinus hence this study will Help the ENT surgeon to predict the maphometricity of the sphenoidal sinus to avoid alarming emergencies during operations because sphenoidal sinus is neighbored by vital vessels and nerves, as this study signifies south Indian population hence this study will have regional, anthroplogical & medico-legal importance.
