The aim of our study was to compare the, efficacy of 10% lignocaine spray applied topically over oropharyngeal area with that applied over laryngotracheal area for Attenuation of pressure response.
Fifty adult patients of ASA grade 1 and 2 posted for elective routine surgeries under general anaesthesia were divided randomly into two groups of 25 each in a double – blind manner. Group-1 was sprayed with 10% lignocaine solution over oro- pharyngeal mucosa in a dose of 2mg/kg body weight. Group-2 was sprayed with 10% lignocaine over laryngeal mucous in a dose of 2mg/kg body weight. The two groups were compared with respect to changes in pulse rate, blood pressure and development of any complications for a study period of five minutes after laryngoscopy.
During and after laryngoscopy, tachycardia was significantly more in oral group as compared to laryngeal group. During laryngoscopy the rise in blood pressure was significantly more in laryngeal group as compared to oral group. No complication was observed in any patients.
In oral group of patients there was a better Attenuation of pressure response and laryngeal group there was a better Attenuation of tachycardiac response. Therefore, spraying lignocaine solution over both oropharyngeal and laryngotracheal areas will aenuate both pulse rate and BP responses.
