To Establish a Clinicopathological Relation in Cases of Benign Breast Disease with Special Reference to Fibroadenoma

Abstract

Benign lesions of the breast are common. They have been known to affect both males and females. About 30% of women suffer from benign breast disorder and require treatment in their life. At least 90% patients aending a breast clinic will have a benign breast condition. The various breast lesions range from mastalgias, inflammatory conditions, palpable mass, swelling or generalized lumpiness which vary from aberrations of normal development and involution, nipple discharge, benign breast tumors to malignant breast disease. In this study we analyzed the spectrum of Benign Breast Diseases with respect to age, sex, mode of presentation, clinical features and management. An evaluation between clinical and cytohistological correlation of Fibroadenoma was also done.

A prospective study of fifty patients of benign breast disease in the age group of 16–40 years were studied for their clinical profile, investigative study and management. This study was carried out for from April 2011 to April 2012. FNAC was done for all the patients and HPE was done for 28 operated cases. Clinical/cytohistological correlation was done.

50 cases of BBD were studied. 19 cases were treated conservatively and rest underwent surgery. Fibroadenoma was the commonest followed by fibroadenosis. Lump in the breast was the commonest presenting complaint. The upper outer quadrant was the commonest location. Clinico pathological correlative study showed 60% sensitivity and Cytohistological correlation showed 85% sensitivity.

Benign Breast Diseases are a spectrum of breast diseases which are common among reproductive women and for which an effective management protocol can be instituted on the basis of FNAC and Histopathology and some cases can be managed conservatively on the basis of FNAC.
