Abstract

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is now standard treatment of gallstone disease and has traditionally been performed using multiple small sites. Single incision laparoscopic surgery has emerged as an alternative technique to improve cosmesis and minimize complications associated with pain in multiple incisions and longer hospital stay. Permission to conduct the study was taken from the ethical committee of our institute.

Study evaluates and compares Single Incision Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy with Standard four port Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (SLC).

Between January 2014 and February 2015, All patients were assigned to one of the two groups, SILC or SLC randomly. Operative time, length of stay, post operative pain, cosmesis and surgical complications were compared between the two groups.

The mean operating time was 59.95 mins as compared to 43.10 mins in SLC. Additional dose of injectable analgesic was required in 25% of patients with SILC and 45% of patients with SLC. Port site infection was seen in 2 cases with SILC and 1 case of SLC. Conversion to SLC or open was not required in any case. Significance was calculated by student “t” test. A p value less than.05 was considered significant.

Transumblical SILC gives comparable results to SLC and is superior alternative when cosmesis and post operative recovery time are considered but the operative time is significantly more.
