Abstract

To evaluate the role of MR imaging in characterization of soft tissue tumors.

We conducted a prospective study of a 36 consecutive patients who have been referred for MRI with a clinical suspicion of Soft tissue tumors to the radiology department. The study includes both children and adults.: All the patients with soft tissue tumors in extremities are included.

On evaluating the MRI findings the cases were broadly categorised to groups of benign & malignant tumors. Benign tumors included Lipoma, benign fibrous lesions, fibromatosis, nerve sheath tumors, glomus tumor & lymphangioma. Malignant tumors include malignant fibrous histiocytoma, synovial sarcoma, fibrosarcoma, well differentiated liposarcoma.

This prospective study concluded that MRI is an important imaging modality in management of Soft tissue tumor to know the extent of involvement & helps in planning the surgery. Benign & malignant soft tissue tumors cannot be correctly diagnosed based on any single criteria.
