Helicobacter Pylori (H. Pylori) are considered to be the most common human infectious agent leading to gastritis, ulcer and probably Gastric cancer.
To evaluate the prevalence of H. Pylori infection and histological gastritis in western UP using endoscopic biopsy of the stomach.
A total of 166 stomach biopsies (97 males and 69 females) were analysed at Muzaffarnagar Medical College, Muzaffarnagar, UP, between December 2013 and March 2015, using haematoxylin and eosin histologically and Rapid Urease Test for detection of H. Pylori.
Out of 166 cases, 121(76.1%) were positive for H. Pylori infection. Out of 121, 84 cases were associated with active chronic gastritis, 35 cases with chronic gastritis and 1 case each with gastritis carcinoma and normal histological features. The Prevalence of H. Pylori was more common among young(26–44 years) and middle age (45–59 years) groups, 34.5% and 30.9%, respectively. H. Pylori were present in 36.9% females and in 22.2% of males. H. Pylori were found in the gastric antrum in 40.9%of cases, and the gastric cardia was free of H. Pylori.
H. Pylori associated active chronic gastritis is the most common form of stomach diseases encountered in this study. In addition, female, young and middle age group and gastric antrum had the highest frequency of H. Pylori organisms.
