In 1921 Sir Ashley Cooper first described anterior thoracic outlet syndrome in a young women with arterial ischemia and demonstrate the relationship between cervical rib and compression of subclavian artery. Whatever the cause of pathology, the constant presence of first rib with other abnormal pathological structures will produce symptoms and problems.
To study the results of first rib resection through transaxillary approach for thoracic outlet syndrome.
This is interventional study done at Tirunelveli Medical college during 1995–2015. Sampling technique used was purposive sampling. Sample size was calculated by Z2S(1-S)/d2 (4), 200 cases of first rib resection through transaxillary approach were selected. Data was entered in Microsoft excel 2010 & Statistical analyses were done with SPSS trial version 20. Statistical test used are descriptive statistics.
Age group 14–76 years with males 73 & females 127. 136 patients present with neurological symptoms (90.6%) radiating pain from neck, shoulder to hand paraesthesia, numbness, tingling weakness or dysfunction of hands. 14 patients were presented with vascular symptoms (9.6%)
Diagnosis and treatment of thoracic outlet syndrome is demanding, frustrating, clinically and technically challenging. Transaxillary approach is the easiest and produces less pain with fewer complications that too occurs rarely.
