Unusual Complications of Gall Stones- Gallstone Ileus with Review of Literature

Gall stone ileus (GI) a rare complication of cholelithiasis presents as intestinal obstruction and forms 1 to 4% of all causes of bowel obstruction. The mortality associated with this condition has been reported to range between 12% to 27%.

The optimal management of acute GI is controversial and can be: enterotomy with stone extraction alone; enterotomy, stone extraction, cholecystectomy and fistula closure.

We describe a case to highlight some of the pertinent issues involved in GI management to minimize recurrent disease and postoperative complications.

GI is a rare condition and affects the elderly population with a female predominance and relieving the obstruction by an enterotomy remains the commonest scheme of management.
