Incisional Hernia is a common surgical condition. Preperitoneal mesh repair technique showed reduced number of postoperative complications and recurrence compared to other techniques
To evaluate the technique of preperitoneal (sublay) mesh repair of incisional hernias.
This was a prospective study of 41 cases done between January 2013 to December 2014 at a tertiary care hospital of Hyderabad. Preperitoneal (sublay) mesh implantation was done in all the 41 cases. Follow up of 12 month was carried in the OPD and postoperative complications, hospital stay and recurrences were noted if any.
In this study of fourty one patients, seventy three percent of females (n= 30) outnumbered twenty seven percent males (n=11). The main presenting feature was swelling of the abdomen in all the forty one patients (100%) in the vicinity of the previous operative scar. In eighty two percent of patients (n=34), the most common incision leading to incisional hernia was the midline incision of abdomen followed by Pfannensteil's incision in twelve percent (n=5). Major wound infection occurred in two patients (7.5%) only but without the removal of mesh. Only six patients had seroma formation. No recurrence was noted in follow up group.
It is concluded that preperitoneal mesh repair is the ideal technique for incisional hernia.
