Abstract

Examination of placenta gives important information which may be helpful to take care of both mother and infant. During examination in delivery room the size, shape, consistency and completeness of the placenta should be determined. The umbilical cord should be assessed for length, insertion, number of vessels, thromboses knots. Uncommon findings of placenta, umbilical cord and membranes are associated with abnormal fetal development and perinatal morbidity. Tissue may be retained because of abnormal lobation of the placenta or because of placenta accreta, placenta inccreta or placenta percreta.

A study of one hundred and eighteen human placentas was done to find out normal parameters of placenta in western Maharashtra population in India.
