Abstract

No-Scalpel Vasectomy (NSV) was introduced in china. India was first country in the world to introduce NSV in their family planning programme. The aim of this study was to compare study result of NSV with ligation and vasocclusion with thermal cautery and to study the complications of both procedures.

The present study was carried out in Department of Surgery and male family planning, Bokaro General Hospital. Total of 163 acceptors were registered for NSV. One hundred acceptors came for both the regular follow-up. Only these 100 acceptors who came for follow up semen analysis were included in the study.

The mean age of acceptor and their spouse was 35.7 yrs and 30.60 yrs respectively. Average operating time was 9.71 minutes. However there was increase in operating time by 1.94 min, when thermocautery with facial interposition was used. Infection rate, rate of haematoma formation and recanalisation rate was 0.0% involving all 100 patients. The use of thermocautery lead to definite decrease in incidence of sperm/suture granuloma formation at the site of vas excision in our study. All subjects achieved azoospermia at the end of 8 weeks in our study.

No scalpel vasectomy (NSV) is an elegant and minimally invasive with very low complication rates. Use of jet injector leads to complete avoidance of needle stick injury and syringe waste management There was no further reduction in time to achieve azoospermia by use of thermocautery over ligation and excision, if facial interposition was done in all the cases.
