Evaluation of Outcome after Continuous & Interrupted Suturing Techniques in the Hypospadias Repair

Hypospadias is one of the most common congenital genital anomalies in males with an estimated incidence of 1 in 300 live births. In the present prospective randomized study we have evaluated the outcome after continuous & interrupted suturing techniques in the hypospadias repair and also compared both the techniques.

A total of 50 consecutive patients of all age group with primary subcoronal, distal penile and mid penile hypospadias were included in study and they all were evaluated with detailed history and physical examination. In all patients urethroplasty was done over a catheter that was kept for 7–10 days after surgery. After removal of catheter, urinary stream was observed in all patients of both groups. Patients were discharged home after removal of catheter.

The urethral stricture formation which was encountered post operatively in 2 patients from Group-1 & 1 patient from Group-2 was primarily managed conservatively by serial dilation with Hegar's dilator and with urethral calibration. In all patients urethral stricture could be managed by serial dilation & urethral calibration alone and no surgical intervention was required in any of the patients.

Interrupted suture technique for TIP urethroplasty reduces the incidence of urethrocutaneous fistula in hypospadias repair as compared to continuous suture technique. However, a large randomized study is required to further confirm our finding that interrupted suture technique is better than continuous suture technique for TIP urethroplasty in hypospadias repair.
